The tray former – shrink wrapper groups, packs and protects products in a cardboard tray before they enter the shrink wrapper. The products are conveyed on the infeed conveyor, positioned on a formed cardboard blank and secured with hot-melt adhesive before being wrapped in shrink film.

This packaging solution is suitable for industrial lines requiring a combination of cardboard support, neat presentation and pack protection, depending on the product formats, required grouping pattern and production output.

Tray former – shrink wrapper.

Operating Principle:

Products arriving in a single lane are taken over by the tray former infeed conveyor and conveyed to the loading area. At the same time, cardboard blanks are picked one by one, formed and placed on an indexed lug chain. The products are pushed onto the tray. The cardboard edges are folded and closed using hot-melt adhesive.

The pack then enters the shrink wrapper. Production output depends on the required grouping pattern and is typically around 12–15 packs per minute.

FAQ – Tray Former – Shrink Wrapper

Before Starting a Project

At what output does this solution become relevant?

A tray former – shrink wrapper generally becomes relevant from around 5 packs per minute, depending on the type of product, pack configuration and production organisation.

Can it be integrated into an existing line?

Yes. Its automatic infeed allows stand-alone operation and makes it easy to integrate into an existing packaging line. The layout study takes into account the product infeed direction, available conveyors, upstream and downstream output rates, and available space.

Technical Questions

What is a tray former – shrink wrapper?

A tray former – shrink wrapper is a packaging machine that forms a cardboard tray around a group of products and then conveys the pack to a shrink wrapper. It combines cardboard support, product grouping and shrink-film protection.

How does a tray former – shrink wrapper work?

Products arrive on an infeed conveyor while the cardboard blanks are picked, formed and positioned on an indexed lug chain. The products are then pushed onto the tray, after which the cardboard edges are folded and hot-melt glued before the pack enters the shrink wrapper.

What products can be packed with a tray former – shrink wrapper?

This machine can be used for different products, including pots, containers and bottles, that require grouping on a cardboard tray and shrink wrapping. The configuration depends on the product format, number of units per pack, product stability and required output.

What are the benefits of hot-melt gluing?

Hot-melt gluing quickly closes the cardboard tray edges and keeps the pack stable before it enters the shrink wrapper. It contributes to packaging stability and consistent pack quality.

What output can a tray former – shrink wrapper achieve?

Output depends on the grouping pattern, product format and line configuration. As a guide, this type of machine can operate at around 12 to 15 packs per minute depending on the application.

Why combine a cardboard tray with shrink film?

The cardboard tray supports the pack, while the shrink film provides additional protection and improves stability during transport or handling. This combination provides stable, practical and attractive packaging.

Can the tray former – shrink wrapper be adapted to my production line?

Yes. PROPACK can assess the product formats, tray type, required grouping pattern, target output and layout constraints in order to propose a solution suited to your packaging line.

How can I obtain a study for a tray former – shrink wrapper?

To define the most suitable solution, we recommend providing PROPACK with the product dimensions, number of units per pack, required output, type of cardboard used and the constraints of your production line.
