A cartoning machine is a packaging machine that picks up a pre-glued cardboard carton supplied flat by the carton manufacturer, erects it, inserts one or more products and then closes the carton. In a horizontal cartoning machine, products are inserted from the side. An automatic cartoning machine inserts products without manual intervention during each cycle, whereas a semi-automatic cartoning machine requires an operator to perform this operation.
For over 30 years, PROPACK has supplied and integrated CIEMME (IMA Group) horizontal cartoning machines, both automatic and semi-automatic, for packaging a wide range of products in cardboard cartons, including trays, bags, biscuits, ready meals and other food or industrial products.
The range meets various production requirements, from semi-automatic applications to fully automated lines and high-speed solutions. Depending on the model, carton formats and machine configuration, production speeds can reach up to 200 cartons per minute.
Cartons are picked up and opened using a system of suction cups and counter-suction cups, ensuring positive carton opening. Products can be inserted manually or automatically using dedicated feeders, grouping systems or robotic solutions suited to the application.
Cardboard is widely used in industrial packaging, particularly for its protective properties, ease of printing and recyclability.
The CIEMME (IMA Group) cartoning machines supplied by PROPACK use pre-glued cardboard cartons and can also handle cartons made from recycled cardboard, subject to their technical specifications. Selecting appropriate carton formats and dimensions makes it possible to adapt packaging to the products and reduce unnecessary cardboard consumption.
In the context of the European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), this technology enables manufacturers to favour recyclable cardboard packaging, potentially incorporating recycled materials, while optimising material consumption.
